Press release -

Northumbria’s Autumn 2021 Newspaper is out now!

Packed with the latest news, features and interviews, Northumbria University News is the perfect way to keep up to date with the exciting developments taking place across the University – with the latest edition available to read online now.

In this newspaper, we showcase how the Northumbria community is contributing to the global fight against climate change. From innovative research teams bringing multidisciplinary perspectives to a huge range of studies, through to institutional and individual commitments, the University is taking action to address the impact of climate change and help ensure a safer, more stable future for our planet.

Northumbria University is supporting the response to some of the biggest challenges facing the world today. The contribution that universities can make to society, science, culture, communities, and the economy is more important than ever. Bringing the best minds together, universities can change the world we live in. We are proud that Northumbria’s staff, students, and graduates are at the forefront of that change.

Sometimes the answers to the big questions facing society can’t be found on our planet. As part of a Focus on Space feature in this edition, we highlight the research being done by space health experts at Northumbria working with astronauts living on the International Space Station, and how this will help inform healthcare back on earth.

The University will also be helping to bring new nurses to the frontline of healthcare as we share the news that the Nursing and Midwifery Council has selected Northumbria to be one of two new national testing centres where nurses and midwives can complete the final stage of their training.

Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Andrew Wathey CBE, reflects on some of the biggest achievements at Northumbria over the past 18 months in this issue’s ‘Big Interview’ and discusses his hopes for the future as we emerge from the pandemic with renewed optimism.

The theme of celebration continues as we mark the return to in-person graduation ceremonies for thousands of students who had the opportunity to formally recognise the culmination of their studies with events at Newcastle Cathedral. Coverage within this issue is also dedicated to recognising the sporting achievements of Northumbria students past and present, who took on Tokyo in style in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and returned home with a total of seven Paralympic medals for their respective countries.
