Inspiring knitwear designer wins Framework Knitters’ Award

Bethany Young, a Northumbria University Fashion student, won the Framework Knitters’ Award, including a £1,500 bursary, for her innovative knitwear designs inspired by Teesside’s industrial history. This achievement highlights her dedication and skill in the knitwear industry.

Government backs new centre for writing in the North East

The Department for Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) has awarded £5m of its Cultural Development Fund to help create a new centre for writing and publishing in Newcastle upon Tyne. The centre will develop the next generation of northern writers, become a hub for the publishing industry in the North and be a place where residents of the region can discover their writing potential.

Prestigious History journal moves to Northumbria University

Northumbria University has been appointed to lead the editorship of "History," the prestigious journal of the Historical Association. Under Dr. Daniel Laqua, a team of 15 scholars will enhance the journal's online presence and engage with diverse historical topics.

During the Summer of 2024, researchers at Northumbria University worked with staff and children at a large primary school to undertake case study research on the implementation and impact of Operation Encompass, a police and education setting information sharing partnership enabling staff in those settings to offer immediate and ongoing support to children experiencing domestic abuse.

New Writing North and publishers Hachette UK have opened a dedicated new audiobook recording studio in the North East. Sounds Good Audiobooks is based within Northumbria University’s city centre campus in the heart of Newcastle.

New exhibition explores sense of Belonging through art

The new exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle, titled "Belonging," explores the sense of connection artists have to the North East region. Curated by Northumbria University student Ella Nixon, the exhibition focuses on women artists and their contributions to the local arts scene. Entry is free.

Musician gives new life to hidden nativity painting

Hidden for centuries, a nativity painting was uncovered beneath a work depicting John the Baptist. Musician Hank Sullivant chose it for his new album, drawn to its luminous sections. The painting's discovery sheds light on the power of art and the history of conservation efforts at The Bowes Museum and Northumbria University.
