Press release -

Northumbria’s Summer 2022 newspaper is out now

Packed with the latest news, features and interviews, the newspaper is the perfect way to keep up to date with the exciting developments taking place across the University. The Summer edition is available to read online now.

This edition features a special research-focused pull-out supplement, Tackling tomorrow’s global challenges today, as we celebrate Northumbria’s extraordinary achievements from the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021. The REF provides a unique analysis of research across UK universities. It shows where research stands in terms of quality and output on the domestic and global stage, presents the real impact research has on our society, and highlights the real-world benefits it brings.

The latest results, released in May 2022, saw Northumbria University’s standing for research excellence grow exponentially. The University’s research power ranking rose to 23rd, having previously risen to 50th in 2014 from 80th in 2008, making Northumbria the sector’s largest riser in research power ranking for the second time. The special supplement highlights a snapshot of the University’s research responding to some of the biggest challenges facing the world today, transforming lives and making a powerful contribution to social, cultural and economic development.

Also in this issue, we announce a renewed partnership between the University and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art after over a decade of collaboration, we delve into a project which is turning the tide on plastic pollution, and we reflect on a recent visit from George Freeman MP, Minister for Science, Research and Innovation.

Other must-read stories include a focus on a project by staff and students involved in the University’s Fashion programmes to support an exhibition which brings to life the rich history of Newcastle’s flagship department store, Fenwick, for the store’s 140th anniversary. And a research partnership with consumer goods giant, Procter & Gamble, which has revealed that thousands of tonnes of air pollution could be reduced by changing the way we dry our laundry.
