The North East branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) named Evelina Somoglou and Laura McClorey as the winners of this year’s Student Awards following a rigorous process judged by representatives from international firm Ryder Architecture and independent practice ALT Studios.

Northumbria student named one of the UK’s top 30 young engineers

A student of Northumbria University has been named one of the country’s top young engineering talents. Arturas ‘Arthur’ Matusevicius, who is studying on the University’s MSc in Electrical Power Engineering programme, is among only 30 winners of a 2022 BrightSparks Award.

Professor appointed group chair of world-leading engineering society

A major UK science and engineering institution has made a Northumbria University professor chair of its technical community group. Professor Ben Bin Xu, an expert in materials science from the University’s Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering, will lead the Materials Characterisation and Property Group of the prestigious Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3).

UK-wide net zero target takes a step forward with CO2 recycling project

Carbon dioxide and water could be recycled into renewable future fuels under a new system being developed by engineering experts at Northumbria University. Led by Dr Shahid Rasul, a senior lecturer in the University’s Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering, the team has successfully used an inexpensive copper-based catalyst to convert CO2 into both gas and liquid fuels.
