Students voice their satisfaction with Northumbria

Northumbria University has achieved above average satisfaction in over half of its subjects according to the 2014 National Student Survey, published today (Tuesday 12 August).

More than 40 courses achieved satisfaction ratings of 90% or above, of which nine scored the top rating of 100% satisfaction.

The National Student Survey is an annual measure of the opinions of final year university students on the quality of their courses and their experiences of studying at their chosen university.

The independent survey is commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The findings are used by many prospective students, their families and advisors to make study choices.

The survey responses showed that the academic support provided to Northumbria students was higher than the sector average. Students also said that they were more satisfied this year than last with the organisation and management of their courses and with the Students’ Union.

Students on Northumbria’s nursing and healthcare courses also reported higher than average satisfaction with their courses, compared to those offered by other institutions.

Professor Andrew Wathey, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Northumbria University, said: “The National Student Survey reminds us what we are here for. It is one of the most important sources of feedback from students, telling us what is most important to them.

“This year’s results are evidence of our hard work in recent years to provide our students with an excellent academic experience. They also complement our recent improved ranking in the Times Higher Education’s annual survey, in which Northumbria was ranked 21st out of 111 universities for student experience.”

Courses achieving 100% satisfaction were: Building Services Engineering; Business with International Management; Childhood Studies and Disability Studies; English Literature and History; Human Nutrition; Interior Architecture; IT Management for Business; Spanish with Business, and 3D Design.

Other programmes achieving high levels of satisfaction from students included Nursing Studies and Leadership and Management which achieved 98% and Architecture; Fashion; Interior Design and Sport Management, which all scored satisfaction ratings of 97%.

Northumbria University has a limited number of places for high-performing students on some courses through this year’s Clearing. Full details and advice for students can be found by visiting www.northumbria.ac.uk/clearing
