As the United Nations’ annual climate change conference, COP27, gets under way in Egypt in November, the Design Council will be preparing to bring together businesses and designers from across disciplines at Northumbria University.

Northumbria to host award-winning Design for Planet festival

Northumbria University’s School of Design has been announced as the venue for this year’s Design for Planet festival, aimed at galvanising the design community to help tackle climate change.

The Design Council’s flagship event was held at the V&A in Dundee last year, and brought together 120 sustainable design leaders, 6,000 online attendees and was awarded gold in the GOV Design Awards 2022.

The 2022 festival will take place on November 8^th and 9^th and will focus on action and co-designing solutions to the climate crisis. The Design Council will be announcing a wonderful line up of inspiring speakers later this year.

Northumbria’s first class rating for sustainability according to the People & Planet University League table, a Gold Award from Green Tourism’s GreenCheck award scheme for the conference and events offer, and the ambitious targets within the University’s Environmental Sustainability Policy, makes it an ideal venue. The state-of-the-art School of Design has an international reputation for producing innovative, hands-on and industry-ready graduates as well as world leading research.

UK-wide net zero target takes a step forward with CO2 recycling project

Carbon dioxide and water could be recycled into renewable future fuels under a new system being developed by engineering experts at Northumbria University. Led by Dr Shahid Rasul, a senior lecturer in the University’s Department of Mechanical and Construction Engineering, the team has successfully used an inexpensive copper-based catalyst to convert CO2 into both gas and liquid fuels.

The accelerating loss of other species around the globe is so extensive that many experts now refer to it as the sixth mass extinction.

Northumbria University chosen as a national hub for festival of humanities

The Being Human Festival, held across the country each November, demonstrates and celebrates the ways in which humanities-based subjects, which include language and literature, history, geography, philosophy, archaeology, anthropology, law, religion and art, inspire and enrich our everyday lives.

Full programme released for Design for Planet Festival 2022
