Removing the financial barriers for EU students

Press release -

Removing the financial barriers for EU students

Northumbria University is helping graduates enhance their future careers by removing the financial barriers for EU students to study Masters courses.

For one year only, Northumbria has joined forces with the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to offer this year's graduating students the opportunity to access a Masters course free of charge. With significant investment of more than £1.5 million, the University is looking to further grow and diversify its thriving postgraduate community by providing 155 £10,000 bursaries for students from under-represented groups.

This now includes EU students, who are under-represented within the university and therefore automatically meet the secondary criteria required to apply for the £10,000 Masters Bursary.

Essentially, any EU student who has paid the higher tuition fees since 2012-13, may be eligible to apply for the full bursary, regardless of whether they want to study a full-time or part-time Masters level programme,

Changes have also been made to academic scholarships to now include EU qualifications, improving accessibility to Northumbria’s academic excellence for students within the European Union. This means that, in addition to being eligible for an Alumni discount, EU students could now receive up to a 30% discount on the Masters programmes offered at Northumbria.

Someone who credits postgraduate study at Northumbria for furthering her career development is Sophie Haagensen, Northumbria MBA (Master of Business Administration) graduate, who is now Head of Strategy and Planning for Atom Bank. Sophie said: “After studying Biology at undergraduate level, I gained a couple of years’ management experience which prompted my decision to return to University to study a Masters in business. A few years later, I completed an MBA through distance learning.

“My postgraduate studies developed a range of practical and theoretical competencies which have supported me in roles spanning all areas of business, from operations through to strategy."

The University is currently reviewing all of its bursaries and scholarships to offer a wide range of financial support to both undergraduate and postgraduate EU students.
