Prestigious Fellowship conferred on Northumbria Law Academic

Professor Raymond Arthur, from Northumbria Law School, has been awarded a Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences in recognition of excellence in his field and contributions to social sciences.

The Academy’s Fellowship comprises 1,500 leading social scientists from academia, the public, private and third sectors. Their expertise covers the breadth of the social sciences, and their practice and research addresses major challenges facing communities, society, places and economies.

Professor Arthur’s research interests include preventing youth crime and the youth justice system. He has published a number of articles on the delivery of justice for children and families, the complex linkage between parenting and youth offending and the extent to which the youth justice system in England and Wales protects children's human rights.

All Academy Fellows are conferred following an independent and highly selective peer review by the Academy’s Nominations Committee. Professor Arthur joins 56 other leading social scientists who have conferred by the Academy this spring – all highly accomplished individuals recognised for excellence in their fields and wider contributions to the social sciences for public benefit.

Professor Arthur said: “I am delighted and honoured to be awarded this Fellowship. The Academy plays a vital role in championing our discipline and deepening understanding of how social sciences can help shape contemporary societies. In my own area of research, youth justice, reducing reoffending and child welfare are hugely important issues, so it is rewarding to see this recognised through an Academy Fellowship.”
