Northumbria University soars 18 places in UK University League Table

Northumbria University, Newcastle, is among the UK’s biggest climbers in the 2017 Guardian University League Table.

The table ranks the country’s 119 universities by scoring each institution for aspects of the student experience that matter most, such as high-quality teaching, staff to student ratio, spend per student, average entry tariff and employability.

Northumbria University has climbed 18 places from last year - the seventh largest improvement of any other UK institution – and is now ranked in the top 50 UK universities, with eight of its courses featuring in the national top 30.

The Guardian’s league table places Northumbria’s Architecture, Design and Crafts and Education subjects within the top 10 in the UK, while Nursing and Midwifery; Journalism, Publishing and Public Relations; Criminology; Building, Town and Country Planning and Sport Science courses are all ranked within the UK top 30.

This rise marks the University’s highest ever position in this league table and follows a series of accolades and achievements in the past year. Northumbria achieved the Business School of the Year award at the prestigious Times Higher Education Awards and in the summer 2015 International Student Barometer survey, rose 26 places to third spot in terms of satisfaction levels among overseas students. The University has also progressed 14 places into the top 20 in this year’s Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.

Professor Andrew Wathey CBE, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Northumbria University, said: “This result recognises the progress that we are making and reflects our clear focus on quality and putting our students at the heart of the University. It is also a reflection of the investments the University has made to improve the overall student experience and the environment in which excellent teaching can take place. It shows we are achieving what we set out to do, through a planned programme of development. Following a position in the top 50 for Research Power in the 2014 REF, a place in the Guardian's top 50 UK universities will further cement our growing reputation in the UK and internationally.”
