Breaking news: Northumbria’s Spring/Summer Newspaper is here!
Our first digital-only edition of Northumbria University News is here.
Packed with the latest news, features and interviews, Northumbria University News is the perfect way to ‘read all about’ the exciting developments taking place across the University.
In this issue, we look at how the Northumbria University community has worked together to respond to COVID-19. Dr Sterghios Moschos, Associate Professor in Cellular and Molecular Sciences, has led the development of a breath-collection device that could help diagnose diseases, such as coronavirus, in a non-invasive way. On Pg. 4, you can read about how volunteers at Northumbria’s School of Design and the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences produced vital PPE and healthcare equipment for the NHS workers of the North East. Meanwhile, the first graduates of the UK’s first ever Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship scheme have joined the frontline at Newcastle Hospitals during the global pandemic (Pg. 32).
On Pg. 7, we feature Professor Greta Defeyter, of the University’s Social Work, Education and Community Wellbeing department, who has been named as one of The Big Issue’s Top 100 Changemakers in 2020 for making a positive impact on society through her research on holiday hunger.
Other members of the Northumbria community who have been recognised for their outstanding work are Professor Jane Core who has been awarded a MBE (Pg. 3), Professor Chris Ashford, who has been appointed to the influential Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Advisory Council (Pg. 12) and our Chancellor Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, who has been honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement award (Pg. 13).
On Pg. 35, Hilmar Gudmundsson, Professor of Glaciology, has provided the world’s first quantifiable evidence that an increased amount of Antarctica’s ice is flowing into the ocean due to the thinning of the continents’ ice shelves whilst on Pg. 37 we explore how Northumbria has dramatically reduced its carbon emissions, surpassing ambitious targets in the last four years, to bring it closer to its carbon neutral goal.
