Perhaps the most iconic of all Matisse’s late cut-outs, this arresting and deceptively simple figure raises issue not only about the cut-out technique itself (and its relationship to the established practice of collage) but also to representations of the nude and to the process of abstraction when still allied to a recognisable subject.
