Northumbria University Professor Elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales

Professor Kerry Howell from Northumbria University’s Newcastle Business School has been elected as a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales(LSW)—joining a distinguished group of leading academics and professionals recognised for their contributions to research, innovation, and public life.

Professor Howell is one of 56 new Fellows and four Honorary Fellows announced by the LSW in 2025. Fellows are selected for their expertise, impact, and leadership across academic, civic, and professional sectors, and their work plays a vital role in shaping Wales' future through research and innovation.

This year’s cohort includes individuals from a wide range of disciplines, highlighting the critical role research plays in addressing modern global challenges, such as climate change, health crises, and social inequality.

Professor Howell’s election celebrates his distinguished research and leadership within his field and reflects Northumbria University’s commitment to world-leading research with real-world impact. His work adds to a growing recognition of Northumbria’s academic excellence across the UK and beyond.

Professor Howell said: “It is a great privilege to be elected to the Learned Society of Wales. Being recognised alongside such an esteemed group of scholars and professionals is truly humbling. I look forward to contributing to the Society’s important mission of advancing knowledge and supporting innovation that benefits both Wales and the wider world.”

The announcement of new Fellows was welcomed by the LSW leadership. Professor Hywel Thomas, President of the Learned Society of Wales, said: “We face a huge number of challenges, from climate change to political turmoil to emerging health threats. The answer to so many of these problems will be found in research and robust civic institutions. That expertise is evident in our new Fellows. I’m delighted to welcome them to the Learned Society of Wales.”

This year’s Fellowship includes figures from academia, public health, law, science, and culture. Among them are leading researchers on climate change, autoimmune diseases, digital innovation, and computational intelligence, as well as public servants and cultural contributors. The Society also highlighted growing diversity within its Fellowship, with 23% from ethnic minority backgrounds and 34% women among the new appointees.

Olivia Harrison, Chief Executive of LSW, added: “We’re proud to see growing diversity in our Fellowship and remain committed to further widening representation. The breadth of expertise among our new Fellows is a powerful reflection of the strengths and talent across Wales and beyond.”

Northumbria University congratulates Professor Howell on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to his continued contributions to research, education, and global knowledge exchange.
