Press release -

New Pro Vice-Chancellor for Business and Law joins an elite group of scholars

Northumbria University’s newly appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor for the faculty of Business and Law, Professor Robert MacIntosh, has just become a Fellow of the highly prestigious British Academy of Management (BAM).

Professor MacIntosh, who took up his role at Northumbria in September 2021, becomes one of only 92 Fellows of BAM. The aim of BAM is to promote the highest calibre of UK research in management and business on a global stage, advance research-based teaching and support the highest standards in all areas of management education. As a Fellow, Professor MacIntosh joins an elite group of scholars who have made an outstanding academic contribution to business and management learning, teaching and research. Having a first representative in the Fellow’s College of BAM reinforces Northumbria’s leading role and growing influence in management education.

Professor MacIntosh said: “BAM is a truly inspiring academic community, and I am honoured to receive this Fellowship. I have benefited from the support and development available through BAM and am delighted to have the opportunity to offer similar support to others in the business school community. Business and management education and research are vital – both here in the UK and globally. In joining Northumbria as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Business and Law I am joining a research-rich and business-focused university whose values and qualities mirror those of BAM and I’m sure will prove highly complementary.”

Professor MacIntosh became Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Business and Law at Northumbria on September 1. He was formerly the Head of School for Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University where he oversaw 15,000 students and 300 staff at the university’s campuses in Edinburgh, Dubai, Malaysia and online. As a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and of the Academy of Social Sciences he has an interest in multidisciplinary research and has published books on strategy, organisational change, research methods and impact over the last two decades.

Professor MacIntosh is an elected member of the Council of the British Academy of Management and Chairs the Chartered Association of Business Schools. He has extensive experience working with, facilitating and researching strategy in a range of publicly traded firms, large public organisations and third sector organisations and has supervised a number of senior leaders from the US, Canada, Europe and the UK to doctoral completion.

Outside academia, Professor MacIntosh is involved with the social care charity Turning Point Scotland which provides services to over 8,000 of society’s most vulnerable citizens. He joined the board in 2013, was elected Chair in 2019 and demits office this month.
