Science and innovation in the spotlight

Dinosaur cloning, 3D action dolls created by lasers and robots and bacterial “kiss” portraits are just some of the activities on offer when the world-famous Maker Faire returns to Newcastle.

The two-day event, which is hosted by the Centre for Life and supported by Northumbria University, will also feature a humanoid knitting robot, animated pole dancers and a LEGO robot that draws pancakes, words and pictures on an electric griddle.

For the first time, Dale Dougherty, the founder of the Maker Faire concept and one of Barack Obama’s ‘champions of change,’ will be in attendance.

Lucy Winskell, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Region, Engagement and Partnerships at Northumbria University said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the International Centre for Life on this hugely popular festival of invention which brings science, technology and innovation to life and encourages people to think about these subjects in a whole new light.

“As a research-engaged university, we share the passion for curiosity, science and innovation that the Centre and the Maker Faire events inspire.

“We are proud to be based in a city which has links to famous inventors such as Joseph Swan and George Stephenson and equally delighted to continue this tradition of innovation through our own graduates such as iPhone and iPod designer Jonathan Ive.”

Maker Faire runs from 27 – 28 April. For more information about the activities on offer or to book tickets online, visitwww.MakerFaireUK.com
