Northumbria sees rapid rise in global rankings

Northumbria University has risen significantly in two subject areas in the 2019 Times Higher Education’s World Rankings, marking further improvements in the institution’s international profile.

After publishing its world rankings for universities in September, Times Higher Education (THE) has today released the third of four announcements ranking 11 different subject areas (Wednesday 7 November).

Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health at Northumbria has risen 150 places from 401-500 in 2018 and is now rated in the top 201-250 courses offered by universities worldwide. The University’s Physical Sciences courses have also climbed by 100 places and are now rated within the 301-400 best in the world. Psychology at Northumbria features in THE’s World Rankings by subject for the first time, appearing in the top 401+ courses available globally.

Northumbria has maintained its strong position in Life Sciences, with subjects ranked in the top 401-500 worldwide, as well as Arts and Humanities, where courses at Northumbria feature in the top 301-400.

The subjects are ranked by measuring performance in 13 areas, covering teaching and the learning environment; the volume, income and reputation of research and the influence of this research by the number of times it is cited. The rankings also consider the international outlook of a university and how much income it generates from industrial relationships.

The improved performance of these subject areas follows Northumbria’s significant rise in the latest THE World University Rankings released in September. Northumbria is now ranked within the top 401-500 of more than 1,200 universities worldwide.

Times Higher will release its rankings for Engineering and Technology and Computer Science courses later this month, which will conclude the 2019 THE World University Rankings by subject.
